Former UGA Player Demarcus Dobbs Arrested for DUI, Drugs

Former Georgia Bulldog and current 49er Demarcus Dobbs was arrested early Friday morning on suspicion of DUI and alleged marijuana possession, The Sacramento Bee reports.

The defensive end reportedly crashed his Cadillac while driving in Santa Clara, California, where the 49ers practice. Authorities are still waiting on the results of a chemical test to determine whether Dobbs was impaired at the time of the accident.

The single car crash happened about 3:45 a.m. near the 49ers practice facility. Dobbs wasn't hurt in the accident and agreed to a chemical test. Police reportedly found pot in his Cadillac.

"I made a dumb mistake, a dumb decision. I take full responsibility for it," Dobbs said, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. "Going forward, I guarantee you it won't happen again because it's not like me."

Despite the apology, the 49ers benched Dobbs during last Sunday's game against the Rams. It's unclear whether he'll play this Sunday against the Dolphins.

If the arrest had happened in Georgia, Dobbs would be facing some pretty stiff penalties. In Georgia, a first DUI offense is punishable by up to a year in jail, a maximum fine of $1,000, at least 40 hours of community service, and an alcohol risk reduction program if found guilty. However, most first-time offenders don't see jail time besides maybe a night spent in the drunk tank.

Dobbs is actually the second 49ers defender to be accused of DUI this year. Aldon Smith was arrested on suspicion of DUI in Miami in January. However, he qualified for a program that allowed him to reduce the charge to reckless driving.
